Brie, of course, agreed to accompany me to Burgos. But she tempered my urgency and encouraged me to walk to Burgos rather than board a series of buses.

What validated Brie’s argument was her identification of Pam’s desperate desire that I experience the Camino the very same way she had experienced it. That meant walking it. And Pam, diagnosed with cancer, continued to carry on with the tiring task, even at an incredible disadvantage.

Some of Pam’s more powerful phrases from her initial letters suddenly came burning back to life. “You won’t be able to completely understand me and everything I’ve been going through lately until you do this walk.” “Once you’ve embraced the whole concept of the Camino and what it can do to your life, everything just becomes so clear and meaningful. It changed me completely for the better and gave me so much peace.”

Even her incomplete “Don’t you dare” comment in her last letter became a little less mysterious. I could now envision her probable pleas. “Don’t you dare . . . hop the bus to Burgos. Don’t you dare . . . quit the Camino. Don’t you dare . . . give up on us!”

“Plus, you don’t want to be a tramposo, do you?” teased Brie.

Only after we dined and drank at the Plaza de España and I escorted Brie back to the “somewhat cramped” municipal albergue did I realize my nagging problems had once again dominated our discussion.

“I’m sorry, Brie. I forgot about everything that happened to you after Los Arcos.”

Brie forgave me with a smile and a quick embrace. “Well, now we have something to talk about tomorrow, don’t we?”

That does it! No more complaining about the Camino. No more outward pining for Pam. I once again committed to becoming a better pilgrim—and a better friend to Brie. I owed her that.

Of course, this proved more difficult than I thought. And I was severely tested the following day . . .
