Brie, of course, agreed to accompany me to Burgos. But she tempered my urgency and encouraged me to walk to Burgos rather than board a series of buses.
What validated Brieâs argument was her identification of Pamâs desperate desire that I experience the Camino the very same way she had experienced it. That meant walking it. And Pam, diagnosed with cancer, continued to carry on with the tiring task, even at an incredible disadvantage.
Some of Pamâs more powerful phrases from her initial letters suddenly came burning back to life. âYou wonât be able to completely understand me and everything Iâve been going through lately until you do this walk.â âOnce youâve embraced the whole concept of the Camino and what it can do to your life, everything just becomes so clear and meaningful. It changed me completely for the better and gave me so much peace.â
Even her incomplete âDonât you dareâ comment in her last letter became a little less mysterious. I could now envision her probable pleas. âDonât you dare . . . hop the bus to Burgos. Donât you dare . . . quit the Camino. Donât you dare . . . give up on us!â
âPlus, you donât want to be a tramposo, do you?â teased Brie.

âIâm sorry, Brie. I forgot about everything that happened to you after Los Arcos.â
Brie forgave me with a smile and a quick embrace. âWell, now we have something to talk about tomorrow, donât we?â
That does it! No more complaining about the Camino. No more outward pining for Pam. I once again committed to becoming a better pilgrimâand a better friend to Brie. I owed her that.
Of course, this proved more difficult than I thought. And I was severely tested the following day . . .
